EVENT REVIEW: 2018 Salute HER Awards
I was honored to be able to cover such an amazing event that was dedicated to shedding light on the many beautiful, strong and talented women who are constantly fighting and braking barriers in their respective fields.
The Salute Her Awards were created and launched by Café Mocha in 2011, with its mission to recognize the incredible women who have made strides in their communities and breaking down barriers. Since it began eight years ago the awards have honored some profound honorees such as; activist Sybrina Fulton, broadcast personality Wendy Williams, “Empire” actress Ta’Rhonda Jones, CNN correspondent Fredricka Whitfield, White House journalist and author April Ryan and actresses Pam Grier, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Cynthia Bailey, Kim Fields, Malinda Williams, Terri J. Vaughn and Vy Higginsen, just to name a few.
Presented by Café Mocha Radio, Miles Ahead Entertainment, Toyota, AARP, WHUR FM, & Ubiquitous Expo led to an awesome night of positivity, diversity and empowerment. Held at the Mead Center for American Theatre, it geared to an intimate night full of great talents and great women.
Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Kenny Lattimore opened the show with a dynamic tribute to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
The honorees consisted of 8 beautiful women; Dr. Susie Owens of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church, Dr. Kym Lee-King (Celebrity Make Up Stylist), Priscilla Clarke (Celebrity Publicist), Angie Goff (NBC News Anchor), Melonie Johnson (President & CEO of MGM National Harbor), Kinshasha Holman Conwill (Deputy Director, National Museum of African American History and Culture) & Maysa Leak (Recording Artist & Vocal Coach).
Hosted by none other than Media Maven & Radio Personality Michel Wright, TV Host & Media Personality Jawn Murray & Entrepreneur and TV Personality Gizelle Bryant.
The event as a whole was a complete success and showcased the power we have in us not only as women but as people and listening to the stories and seeing the visions come alive is what I think is the true essence of this awards is, which is to inspire and empower. My team and I walked away from the awards feeling inspired, knowing that if we do not give up, we too will be in some of these amazing womens shoes and this awards is so needed to help shred light of the powerful women taking risks and making change.
